About Lapsang Souchong Tea
Lapsang Souchong is a special variety of black tea which is made by smoke-drying tea leaves over a pinewood fire. It originates from the Fujian region in China.
Lapsang Souchong benefits are due to antioxidant content and to its anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties. It is also rich in Vitamins, Iron, Potassium, Zinc, and Magnesium.
This tea has a distinctive woody, smoky, and intense flavour, which combines the original taste of black tea with the unique pine smoke aroma of Lapsang Souchong.
Its origins date back to the Qing Dynasty in China and records of its use can be found starting from the 1700s. Its creation was probably accidental. As the chief regent Prince Dorgon was trying to bring the Fujian region under Manchu Imperial rule, the inhabitants of the region tried to hide the tea from the invading soldiers. Some of them tried to prevent the tea leaves from rotting by burning pinewood from the nearby forest. At first, they were not happy with the dark tea resulting from this process but later they offered it to Dutch traders who reacted very positively to this new beverage. This tea became known as Lapsang, which literally means “pinewood”.
